Irish Chain Twist Quilt-A -Long ~ Complete…

I’ve finished my first quilt-a-long!  The Irish Chain Twist with Melissa from Happy Quilting.

Our final task was to piece together our completed blocks to make the quilt top and then quilt and bind it.  The piecing together was easy enough.

I then had to piece the backing with the left over fabric because I didn’t have just one bit big enough to make it as a whole!  I actually quite like the look of the pieced back, although as a wall hanging no one will actually see it!!

When it came time to do the quilting part I was really stuck.  I have only ever done straight line quilting which is fine but I didn’t want to do straight lines over the flower or through the X blocks.  I thought about free motion quilting but I have never done that before and what pattern would look right over my different solid colours?  Oh what to do!  In the end I simply did my straight lines in the ditches around the large blocks, the smaller blocks and the X’s.  It’s okay and I tried to convince myself (rightly or wrongly) that with it being a small wall hanging it didn’t need too much texture!!

I added two triangle corners to the back which I later put a cane through from which to hang it.

The binding I made with the same red fabric as the flower.  I love the look and think it works really well.  However, I did have a complete nightmare sewing it.  On my previous quilts (all two of them!!) I have used the backing folded around to the front as the binding.  This time I made the binding separately and then really got stuck with the corners.  The end result was not good to say the least, my only comfort being that the messy parts are hung against a wall!!  I think I’m going to have to practice my binding techniques, cue another YouTube tutorial!!

Anyway after all of that I am pleased with the end result.  Sure there are things I may change if I did it again but practice makes perfect!!

So thank you to Melissa for her excellent quilt-a-long.  I’m sure I will be back to join in another one (when I’ve made some headway with some of the other projects on my to-do list!!)

  1. it is absolutely gorgeous Emma!!! What a beautiful finish. And i love the sparse quilting on it, really adds to the overall design I think!!! And yes, that binding can be tricky. I remember my first few, scary!! But practice and before long, you won't even have to give it a second thought 😉 I am so glad you quilted along with me and now you have such a beautiful finish to show for it. Great job!!!
